Picture this: You stand before Den Gamle Golfbane. Its history whispers through the rustling leaves. This isn’t just any golf course. It’s Scandinavia’s first. Established in 1898 it holds a unique place in golfing history.

Initially a humble nine-hole course its design was inspired by The Open Championship courses in the UK. The course was deliberately challenging with narrow fairways thick rough and firm greens. Imagine the players back then. Many lacked cars. They’d take the train to Klampenborg then walk or hire a horse-drawn carriage.

The course wasn’t always where it is today. It started further away. Then in 1928 a new eighteen-hole course opened. A British architect designed it in a mere fourteen days. A testament to his skill. The course is situated on the Hermitage Plain a landscape shaped by centuries of history.

Later a major restoration in 2008 enhanced The Open design. Scottish architect Tom Mackenzie oversaw the project. He used the same crew and machines he used on actual Open Championship courses. The greens were improved. The bunkers deepened. The entire experience was elevated.

Den Gamle Golfbane hosted the Copenhagen Cup from 1946 to 1973. This tournament attracted famous international golfers. They used it as a warm-up for The Open. Its similarity to Open courses made it ideal preparation. Legendary golfer Peter Thomson a five-time Open champion even played here.

Even the groundskeeping has a fascinating history. The greenkeepers can’t use pesticides. They have to rely on mechanical methods. They even developed their own technique to control clover using iron sulfate. This shows their ingenuity and dedication.

Today Den Gamle Golfbane remains a beautiful and challenging course. A true testament to the game’s rich history. It’s a place where nature and golfing tradition intertwine. It’s a place to experience a piece of golfing history. A captivating blend of past and present. This is Den Gamle Golfbane. A memorable experience awaits.
