Born from rebellion Den Frie Udstilling stands before you. Its story is one of artistic defiance. It began in 1891 a protest against the rigid rules of the Kunsthal Charlottenborg. Artists felt stifled their creativity constrained. They craved freedom. They wanted a space to showcase their work without censorship. Thus Den Frie Udstilling The Free Exhibition was born.

Den Frie wasn’t just another gallery. It was a movement a statement. Think of the Salon des Refusés in Paris. This was its Danish counterpart. Johan Rohde Jens Ferdinand Willumsen and other prominent artists spearheaded this bold initiative. Their first exhibition featured 100 works by 18 artists. These included some of Denmark’s greatest painters. Imagine the excitement the tension the hope.

Initially housed in a modest space Den Frie quickly outgrew its confines. In 1893 it moved to a temporary wooden pavilion. Incredibly even international artists like Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh exhibited there. A wooden pavilion hosted giants of the art world.

A few years later Den Frie found a new home. Jens Ferdinand Willumsen designed a stunning pavilion inspired by Egyptian and Greek temples. Its octagonal extension added in 1905 remains a distinctive feature. The building’s Pegasus relief is a powerful symbol of artistic freedom. It boldly declared Den Frie’s commitment to unrestrained expression.

Disagreements among members led to the creation of Grønningen in 1915. However Den Frie remained a vital force in Danish art. It continued to champion experimental art. It provided a platform for emerging and established artists. Since the 1950s Den Frie has showcased the works of numerous influential artists. Ole Schwalbe Richard Mortensen Ejler Bille and many more have graced its walls.

Today Den Frie stands as a testament to its enduring legacy. It’s a listed building a protected monument. Extensive renovations in 2006 and 2014 have preserved its historical character. Yet Den Frie continues to evolve. It remains a vibrant hub for contemporary art hosting experimental exhibitions. It actively bridges tradition and innovation.

Den Frie is more than a building. It’s a living symbol of artistic freedom. It embodies the spirit of rebellion the pursuit of innovation and the power of collective action. It continues to challenge conventions nurture talent and inspire generations of artists. Step inside and experience its rich history for yourself.
