Bağcılar has a history that stretches back to the Ottoman period. It was once known for its vineyards. This is where the name Bağcılar comes from. The name means “vineyards”. The area was renamed Yeşilbağ when it became a town. Later it reverted to Bağcılar when it became a district.

In Ottoman times Bağcılar was a village inhabited by Greeks. It was part of the Mahmutbey sub district. Mahmutbey was one of Istanbul’s oldest settlements. It included eleven villages. Over time the names of these villages changed.

The urbanization of Bağcılar began to take shape by the 1980s. This was when it fully integrated with Istanbul. The main road connecting Bağcılar and Bakırköy became a central hub. The neighborhoods of Çınar, Merkez, Sancaktepe, Yavuz Selim, Yenigün and Yıldıztepe saw the first wave of urbanization.

By the early 1990s Güneşli and Mahmutbey had merged. They formed a continuous urban area with Bağcılar. Bağcılar became a separate district in 1992. This was after it was separated from Bakırköy.

Today Bağcılar is known for its urban transformation projects. It continues to evolve. It is a blend of its historical roots and modern urban development. This makes it a unique and interesting place.
