Demircikara Cami

What if walls could whisper the secrets of centuries? Here at the Demircikara Cami, they do. The Demircikara Cami isn’t just a mosque; it’s a time capsule. Built in 1150 by Demirci Kara Ali during the Ottoman era, this mosque has witnessed the ebb and flow of Antalya’s history. Originally known as Timurcu Karaali Cami, the name eventually shifted to Demircikara Cami. The mosque stands proudly on a raised platform. Its rectangular structure is built of sturdy masonry and rubble stone, topped with traditional Turkish tiles. Look closely at the roof. The tiled, pitched roof extends outwards, creating sheltering eaves over the front prayer area. Imagine the countless prayers that have echoed within these walls. The Demircikara Cami is illuminated by twenty-six windows, twelve at the lower level and fourteen above. Notice the women’s gallery, a U-shaped space extending towards the front. It rests on seven wooden columns, with wooden railings. A wooden staircase outside provides access. Inside, the ceiling boasts a simple, coffered design, adorned with two wooden medallions. The mihrab and minber are simple yet elegant. The minaret stands separate from the main structure, its round body rising from a square base, crafted from cut stone. Just below the balcony, four rows of dentils add an intricate detail. The roof is covered with lead shingles. In the courtyard of the Demircikara Cami, remnants of the past linger. An old well and Islamic graves whisper stories of bygone eras. More recent additions include a restroom and ablution area. Some wooden support beams have been replaced with iron ones. The entrance to the mosque is now enclosed. Today, the Demircikara Cami remains open for worship. However, the women’s gallery entrance is currently closed off by iron railings.
