Standing right in front of Deering Library, you are literally surrounded by history. This grand building, a testament to the love of books and learning, has been a cornerstone of Northwestern University for nearly a century. Charles Deering, a philanthropist and the son of a successful farm equipment magnate, generously funded the construction of this architectural masterpiece.

Deering Library, designed in the Collegiate Gothic style, was modeled after King’s College Chapel in Cambridge, England. It was completed in 1933, serving as Northwestern’s main library for almost four decades. The building is adorned with intricate details, like captivating pelicans, pompous owls, and mischievous monkeys peeking from their perches, a reminder that scholarship needn’t be solemn.

This library, which once housed the University Archives, Music Library, Art Collection, and Special Collections, is now undergoing a major renovation. After years of serving as Northwestern’s main library, Deering Library transitioned into a specialized home for unique and valuable collections. You might be surprised to learn that it was designed as a fitting tribute to Charles Deering’s passion for books. The Deering family, including his widow, contributed over a million dollars to make this dream a reality.

Even during its renovation, Deering Library continues to embody the spirit of knowledge and a lasting legacy for Northwestern University. As you take in the architectural grandeur and imagine generations of students finding inspiration within its walls, you can’t help but feel a sense of wonder and gratitude for the Deering family’s generous contribution.
