Did you know that Deer Park, the bustling suburb you see before you was once home to a haven for deer? Deer Park was named over a century ago after the Melbourne Hunt Club decided to use the area to house their game deer. The original Hunt Club building still stands on Ballarat Road, next to the Deer Park sports oval. It’s a community centre now, but you can imagine those grand hunts that once took place. You might even be able to picture the Melbourne Hunt Club, full of men in their riding attire, galloping through the field. But Deer Park wasn’t always just deer and riders. The suburb wasn’t even Deer Park for long! The area, originally called Kororoit Creek, was chosen in the 1870s as the location for the city’s first explosives factory. The factory grew over the years, first owned by Jones Scott and Co, and then, after several name changes, it ended up as Orica. It was the perfect location, isolated and far from the city. Plus, it had the needed water from Kororoit Creek. Today, the area is a vibrant hub of multiculturalism, with residents hailing from various backgrounds including Maltese, Italian, Vietnamese, Spanish and Macedonian. The Deer Park community sports oval is a public facility and a hub of activity, with the Hunt Club building standing proudly as a testament to its past. On a clear day, you can even see the distant peaks of the Melbourne central business district.
