Picture this. You are standing at the edge of Lake Minnetonka. Before you lies Deephaven a haven of peace and recreation. Deephaven a charming village nestled on the shores of this beautiful lake. Incorporated in 1900 Deephaven is a western suburb of Minneapolis. It boasts a rich history spanning over a century.

Deephaven’s story begins long before its official incorporation. In the mid-1800s settlers flocked to the area drawn by Minnesota’s touted healthful climate. They purchased land for as little as $1.25 an acre. Names like Albert Robinson James Shaver and Elijah Carson still echo in Deephaven’s place names. Their legacy lives on in bays and corners named after them.

Charles S Gibson a lawyer from St Louis played a pivotal role in Deephaven’s development. He built a magnificent summer home called Northome one of the largest on Lake Minnetonka at the time. His influence extended beyond his own home. He platted land for summer cottages and named the streets. Streets bear the names of family and friends. Easton Road Virginia Avenue Hamilton Avenue and Rutledge Avenue tell a story of family and friendship. Sibley Avenue originally Hohenzollern Avenue was renamed during World War I.

The St Louis Hotel a grand hotel built in 1879 attracted many visitors. It became a center of activity for years but ultimately fell into disrepair and was demolished in 1907. Another hotel the Keewaydin Hotel also met a fiery end burning down in 1924. Both hotels offer a glimpse into Deephaven’s past as a summer resort destination.

Hazen J Burton and his wife Alice were influential in Deephaven’s development. They donated land for the town’s first school. Alice Burton is credited with suggesting the name Deephaven for the railway station which would later become the town’s name. Hazen Burton served as Deephaven’s first mayor in 1900.

Deephaven’s growth continued through the 20th century. Its population expanded reflecting a shift from summer homes to permanent residences. Deephaven offers several public beaches and marinas. It showcases a vibrant community spirit and a dedication to preserving its natural beauty and its unique history. Deephaven truly lives up to its name a haven of peaceful living and active recreation.
