“Ever heard of a church that started with just 15 people?” I ask. That’s the story of the Deeper Life Bible Church. We are standing before a branch of a church with global roots.
Deeper Life Bible Church began in Lagos, Nigeria, in 1973. William F. Kumuyi, a mathematics lecturer, started a Bible study group. Fifteen people sought his guidance in understanding the Scriptures. From this small group, the Deeper Christian Life Ministry was born.
Kumuyi was once an Anglican. He later joined the Apostolic Faith Church. In 1975, the church expelled him. He was preaching without credentials. Kumuyi continued his independent ministry. It became the Deeper Life Bible Church in 1982.
By the early 1980s, the church had grown to thousands. Deeper Life Bible Church was formally established. It spread throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Then it reached the United Kingdom. From here, branches developed in Western Europe. Russia, India and North America followed.
The Deeper Life Bible Church in London became a European hub. It is a key point for the church’s expansion. The London branch oversees other churches in the UK and Europe.
In 2020, the Lagos church had over 65000 people. The denomination claims over 800000 members in Nigeria. They state they have over 3000 churches in 40 other countries. The Deeper Christian Life Ministry is part of the Pentecostal Charismatic Churches of North America.
The church has 22 core beliefs. These beliefs guide its teachings and practices. They include the Holy Bible and the Godhead. Also they believe in the virgin birth of Jesus. The church values repentance and restitution. Justification by faith is a core belief. They practice water baptism and observe the Lord’s Supper. Sanctification and Holy Ghost Baptism are important. They also believe in redemption and personal evangelism. The church has specific views on marriage. They believe in the Rapture and the resurrection of the dead. The Great Tribulation is part of their eschatology. They anticipate the Second Coming of Christ. The church also believes in Christ’s millennial reign. They preach about the Great White Throne Judgment. Finally they anticipate a New Heaven and a New Earth. Hell fire is also part of their doctrine.
Today, Deeper Life Bible Church continues to grow. It maintains its focus on Bible-based teachings. It is a global church with humble beginnings. Its story is a testament to faith and dedication. Remember that a small group can make a big difference. From 15 people to a global ministry, the journey of Deeper Life is truly remarkable.
