“Life was good when we first moved in,” a former resident might have said about Dearborn Homes. Standing here, you might find that hard to imagine, but in 1950, Dearborn Homes was a symbol of progress. It was the first Chicago Housing Authority project built after World War II, a beacon of hope for Black families seeking better housing in the heart of Bronzeville.

Dearborn Homes, with its modern design featuring cruciform towers for light and air, was intended to be a step up from the overcrowded slums. Imagine families moving into brand new apartments, some for the first time equipped with elevators; a true novelty back then. However, the story of Dearborn Homes, like many public housing projects, is a complex one.

What began with good intentions soon faced challenges. The buildings fell victim to neglect and inadequate funding. By the 1980s, crime and gang activity cast a dark shadow over the once-hopeful community. The Mickey Cobras became a powerful force here, further contributing to the decline.

But even in the face of adversity, the spirit of Dearborn Homes persevered. Resident Alberta McCain took a stand. She spearheaded the formation of the Resident Corporation Management, a tenant organization aimed at taking back control of their community. This marked a turning point.

In 2007, a glimmer of hope emerged in the form of a much-needed renovation. The buildings, once dilapidated and worn, underwent a transformation. Today, Dearborn Homes stands as a testament to the resilience of its residents. It’s a reminder that even amidst complex challenges, the fight for safe and dignified housing continues.
