“Picture a game designer scaling Mount Everest.” That’s Dean Hall, a man who conquers both digital worlds and real-world peaks. Here at Dean Hall on Campus Road, we explore the legacy of this multifaceted individual.

Dean Hall is best known for creating DayZ. This zombie apocalypse PC game started as a mod. It later became its own standalone game. Hall’s innovative work in the gaming industry has earned him international recognition.

But who is Dean “Rocket” Hall? Born on May 14, 1981, this New Zealander served as a commissioned officer. He was part of the Royal New Zealand Air Force and the New Zealand Army. His military experience profoundly shaped his approach to game design. Survival training in Brunei sparked the initial idea for DayZ.

Hall’s journey wasn’t without challenges. During his military service, he faced grueling survival conditions. He even resorted to eating rotten fish and ferns. By the end, he had lost 25 kilograms and required surgery. These experiences fueled his creative vision.

After leaving the Air Force, Hall worked at Sidhe Interactive. Later, he joined Bohemia Interactive. It was during this time that he created DayZ. The mod’s success led him to become the project lead for the standalone version.

In 2014, Hall ventured out to establish his own game studio, RocketWerkz. Based in New Zealand, RocketWerkz reflects Hall’s commitment to his home country. The studio’s debut title was Ion. Hall later announced Stationeers, a game inspired by Space Station 13.

Dean Hall’s views on the video game industry are insightful. He recognized the shift toward PC gaming as a hub for innovation. He also questioned the traditional publishing model. Hall turned down numerous offers to publish DayZ. He challenged the value publishers provide in the modern gaming landscape.

Beyond gaming, Hall is an accomplished mountaineer. He successfully climbed Mount Everest in 2013. He also skied to the South Pole in 2020. These adventures have influenced his game design, adding a unique layer to his creative process.

Dean Hall believes video game development can be a billion-dollar industry for New Zealand. His work at RocketWerkz aims to achieve this vision.

Dean Hall’s story embodies the spirit of innovation. It highlights perseverance and the pursuit of dreams. From military service to conquering Everest and creating groundbreaking games, Hall’s journey is truly inspiring.
