Has anyone ever noticed how the de Young Museum seems to breathe? The copper skin expands and contracts, changing color with the San Francisco fog. It’s like a living entity nestled among the trees of Golden Gate Park. The de Young Museum isn’t just a building; it’s a story. A story that began in 1895 thanks to M. H. de Young, a newspaperman with a vision. He wanted to bring the world’s art to San Francisco, and the California Midwinter International Exposition of 1894 gave him the perfect opportunity. The first de Young Museum, an Egyptian Revival structure, rose from the remnants of the fair. Sadly, the 1906 earthquake dealt it a heavy blow, forcing a closure and extensive repairs. Undeterred, de Young commissioned a new building, a Spanish-Plateresque masterpiece designed by Louis Christian Mullgardt. This structure, with its signature tower, became the heart of the de Young for most of the 20th century. But time, and another earthquake in 1989, took their toll. The current de Young Museum, opened in 2005, is a marvel of modern architecture by Herzog & de Meuron and Fong + Chan. Its copper cladding, perforated and textured, will continue to evolve with the elements, becoming a reflection of the ever-changing San Francisco landscape. Inside, the de Young Museum houses a diverse collection. From American art spanning centuries to treasures from Africa, Oceania, and the Americas, there’s something to captivate every visitor. Textiles and costumes from around the globe tell stories of culture and tradition. And the contemporary art collection pushes boundaries and sparks conversation. In 2017, the de Young made a significant acquisition of contemporary African American art, adding another layer of depth to its already impressive holdings. More recently, in 2023, a generous gift from Bernard and Barbro Osher brought in 61 works of American art by renowned artists such as Georgia O’Keeffe and Winslow Homer. This ever-evolving collection ensures that the de Young remains a vibrant and vital part of San Francisco’s cultural tapestry. So, the next time you visit the de Young Museum, remember its journey. It’s a testament to the enduring power of art, the resilience of a city, and the vision of one man who dared to dream big.
