Established in 1847 DeSoto boasts a rich history. It’s one of North Texas’ oldest settlements. Imagine Curtis Parks arriving from Indiana with his wife Amelia. They built their home that very year. Other families soon followed. Thomas Cheshier Zebedee Heath and the Nance brothers among them.
DeSoto’s story is about community. In 1881 a post office opened. The town was named to honor Dr Thomas Hernando DeSoto Stewart a beloved local doctor. For years DeSoto remained a quiet farming community. That changed after World War II.
Post-war growth transformed DeSoto. The population boomed. The existing water system was inadequate. Residents knew they needed to incorporate. On February 17 1949 a petition with 42 signatures was submitted. An election followed.
Fifty people voted for incorporation only two opposed. On March 3 1949 DeSoto officially became a city. Wayne A Chowning became the first mayor. The first city council meeting took place at the schoolhouse on East Belt Line Road. DeSoto was now the nineteenth municipality in Dallas County.
DeSoto’s growth continued. Annexations expanded its area. Businesses flourished. The town center revitalization project is a great example. An old strip mall was converted into a thriving hub. City hall the library and a civic center now stand there. It’s a testament to community spirit.
The city’s demographics also changed. The African American population increased significantly. DeSoto became one of the most diverse cities in southwest Dallas County. In 2006 DeSoto received the All-America City Award. This prestigious award recognized its citizens’ collaborative problem-solving.
DeSoto’s journey is a story of resilience growth and community. From its humble beginnings as a small farming settlement to its present-day status as a thriving suburb. DeSoto’s story is a testament to the power of community collaboration. The crossroads where T J Johnson opened his general store in 1848 still thrives today.
