From these hallowed halls countless stories unfold. De La Salle University Manila a beacon of learning stands tall. Established in 1911 by the Brothers of the Christian Schools its legacy echoes through time. Nine brothers arrived from Europe and the United States. They opened the first La Salle school in the Philippines. It began humbly with 125 students in Paco Manila.

De La Salle University Manila’s early days were defined by a unique challenge. The American public education system used English. Catholic schools primarily used Spanish. Archbishop Jeremiah Harty recognized a need. He sought the Brothers to provide quality English-based Catholic education. Initially hesitant to cater to the elite the Brothers agreed. They understood the importance of moral and spiritual training for all.

The school’s growth was remarkable. In 1921 it moved to its current location on Taft Avenue. The student population soared to 425. By 1924 it was recognized as the best private school in the Philippines. De La Salle University Manila expanded its offerings. It added a Bachelor’s Degree program in 1931. It weathered World War II. Despite Japanese occupation it remained open for a time. Tragically sixteen brothers and twenty-five others died in 1945 during the Liberation of Manila.

The post-war era saw further expansion. De La Salle University Manila added programs in Engineering Arts and Sciences and Education. A Graduate School of Business Administration was added in 1960. The 1970s brought significant change. The Women’s Liberation Movement and student activism influenced the university. De La Salle University Manila held its first student council elections in 1969. It opened its doors to female students in 1973. This progressive step reflected the changing times.

In 1975 De La Salle College achieved university status. To manage growth primary and secondary schools were phased out. De La Salle University Manila became solely a higher education institution. The College of Saint Benilde a spin-off institution gained autonomy in 1994. De La Salle University Manila adapted to evolving economic needs shifting to a trimestral academic calendar in 1981. It also joined the University Athletic Association of the Philippines in 1986.

The pursuit of excellence continued. De La Salle University Manila invested in research and faculty development. It embraced the Lasallian Guiding Principles in 2003. These principles shaped its pedagogical framework and curriculum. The establishment of a College of Law in 2009 demonstrated its commitment to societal service particularly human rights advocacy.

Today De La Salle University Manila stands as a testament to its founders’ vision. It continues to inspire students to achieve their full potential. It remains a leading learner-centered research university committed to bridging faith and scholarship. It serves the community especially those in need.
