Marvelous aren’t they? These elegant townhouses before us are the De engelske rækkehuse. They whisper tales of 19th-century Copenhagen.
This row of houses in Frederiksstaden boasts a unique history. Built between 1873 and 1874 they were designed by Vilhelm Tvede for Det Classenske Fideicommis. The English Terrace as they’re also known perfectly blends English architectural style with Danish charm.
Imagine the original residents. They moved into these grand homes. Each approximately 400 square meters they were quite spacious. Three stories an attic and a basement provided ample room for families. The houses initially were rented. They later became individual condominiums in the 1970s. One famous resident was the architect Hans Munk Hansen.
Notice the courtyard. It’s a central feature of the De engelske rækkehuse. The main entrances face inward toward this shared space. Originally small front gardens and sheds lined Toldbodgade. Road widening sadly removed those lovely details.
The nine houses are arranged in a striking way. They are actually paired mirrored doubles. Each half a near perfect reflection of the other. This creates a visually stunning uniformity and balance. The facades are detailed with classical elements. There are quoin stones decorative friezes and a prominent cornice. The original doors and windows beautifully remain.
Even the smallest detail shows careful design. The consistent window and door placement illustrates precision. The courtyards were a communal space where neighbors could interact. They formed a close-knit community within the larger city. Today these homes stand as listed buildings. Their historical and architectural significance is protected.
