Could you imagine poetry etched in stone? Here stands the Dayka Gábor Plaque. It commemorates a gifted Hungarian poet.

Dayka Gábor was born in Miskolc in 1769. His life was tragically short. He died in 1796 at only 27. Yet he left an indelible mark on Hungarian literature.

Dayka’s father was a tailor. The poet lost him early in life. He completed his studies under difficult circumstances. Dayka later entered the seminary in Eger. Then he moved to the seminary in Pest.

Here, he showed his passion for Hungarian language. He organized a self-improvement group with fellow seminarians. Ferenc Kazinczy visited him. This visit forged a lifelong friendship.

In 1790, the seminary closed. Dayka returned to Eger. Before ordination he gave a sermon. It promoted religious tolerance. This sermon clashed with his superiors. Dayka then left the church.

He became a teacher. He taught at schools in Szikszó, Mór, and Lőcse. Later Dayka taught at the Catholic High School in Ungvár.

Illness forced him to retire early. He sought treatment in Kassa. Sadly he succumbed to tuberculosis.

Dayka Gábor’s poetry explored the conflict between individual and society. It expressed the poet’s inner turmoil. He captured feelings trapped by convention. His satirical verses attacked religious fanaticism.

Kazinczy collected and published Dayka’s poems in 1813. This act preserved his legacy for future generations. The plaque honors Dayka’s contributions.

The Dayka Gábor Plaque stands as a reminder. It reminds us of a poet’s brief but brilliant life. His words continue to resonate. They echo the struggles and passions of the human spirit. His legacy lives on.
