Davis Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church isn’t just a building. It’s a living story. A story that began not here in Gary Indiana but in Gary Indiana. It started humbly. In 1955 Reverend A B Jones had a vision. He wanted to share the gospel. He started with the children. He picked them up each Sunday morning. He took them to Sunday school. There was no church building then. Mr and Mrs Marshall opened their home. Their home at 19th and Clark Road became the first sanctuary. The congregation was originally named Providence A M E Church.

The church grew. Sunday school moved to Tarrytown School. It was a testament to cooperation. Mr Oscar Lindsey a devoted member negotiated with the school principal Mr Peschke. They agreed on shared space. The first service at the school was held March 5 1956. It wasn’t a large crowd. But the church continued to grow adding members each week.

In the 1960s the church was renamed. It was renamed in memory of a beloved Indiana Conference Presiding Elder. It became George N Davis Memorial A M E Church. The name reflects a deep respect for the past and a commitment to its legacy. Today it’s simply known as Davis Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church.
