Our story begins in 1843 with the Disruption. Hundreds of ministers and elders bravely left the Established Church. They wanted congregations to choose their own ministers freely.
The first meeting took place in a humble schoolhouse. Another group gathered in a barn. With remarkable speed they raised funds. Cramond Free Church opened its doors for worship on December 17, 1843. This church is now Davidson’s Mains Parish Church.
As the church was built the area transformed. The village of Muttonhole served Edinburgh with dairies and nurseries. It became known as Davidson’s Mains after the Davidson family. They owned the Muirhouse estate.
Davidson’s Mains remained a distinct village for many years. Today it thrives as a suburban community. Yet it retains its unique identity. The church played an integral part in community life 160 years ago. It continues to do so today.
Architect David Cousin designed a small T-plan kirk in 1843. Its flat Gothic windows add to its charm. A timber bellcote with a slated hat was added in 1866. This prickly hat sits proudly on the centre gable.
In 1970 the interior was enlarged. A major refurbishment to the chancel area occurred in 1999. The little school and house were extended in 1933. Auldjo Jamieson & Arnott maintained the domestic scale. They used a dormered roof.
Davidson’s Mains Parish Church has seen many changes. These changes have been in its buildings its organization and its ministry. It has always shared the good news of Jesus. It does this in an ever-changing society.
Today Davidson’s Mains Parish Church welcomes all. Services are held on Sundays at 10.30am. There are also children’s activities. Wednesday services take place at 12.30pm. These include lunch and free transport. Praise and prayer evenings occur on the first Sunday of most months.
