Remember Carter High from Friday Night Lights? That film touched on the story of the 1988 Carter High football team. David W. Carter High School is a public high school in Dallas. It is located in the Oak Cliff area.

David W. Carter High School opened in 1966. It was named for David Wendel Carter. He was a doctor and school board member. Carter served on the Dallas Independent School District board for 25 years. He was president of the board for 16 years. The first class graduated from David W. Carter High School in 1968.

Initially students came from Justin F. Kimball High School. This started a rivalry. The schools play each other in football every year. It is known as “The Oak Cliff Super Bowl.”

David W. Carter High School is known for its athletics. The David W. Carter Cowboys compete in many sports. These include football baseball basketball and more. The 1988 football team won the 5A state title. The team’s story was told in two films. Friday Night Lights also mentions the team.

The Cowboys won the championship game 31-14. They beat the Judson Rockets. Later the title was stripped from Carter due to academic violations. It was then given to Judson. The team reached the playoffs every year from 1990 to 2010. They were state semifinalists in 1971 1974 1982 and 1990.

William H. Atwell and D. A. Hulcy Middle Schools feed into David W. Carter High School. Several elementary schools feed into these middle schools. They all ultimately feed into David W. Carter High School.

David W. Carter High School has many notable alumni. Jessie Armstead played football for the New York Giants. Michael Crabtree played for the Baltimore Ravens. Sha’Carri Richardson is a track and field sprinter. Liz Mikel is an actress and jazz singer. Craig Watkins was the Dallas County District Attorney.

The school’s colors are Columbia Blue White and Red. The mascot is the Cowboys. The school aims to create a lifelong community of alumni. It hopes to increase awareness pride and participation. David W. Carter High School has a rich history and a bright future.
