Founded in 1680 Davenant Foundation School boasts a rich history. It began humbly in Whitechapel. Reverend Ralph Davenant left his possessions to establish a school for 40 boys. The funds also supported 34 girls. They learned basic skills like reading writing and arithmetic or sewing. The school initially stood near a burial ground a stark contrast to its present location.
Davenant’s impact extended far beyond Whitechapel. In 1813 it became known as the Cradle of the National Schools of England. It adopted Dr Andrew Bell’s monitorial system. This innovative approach allowed one master and senior boys to educate hundreds of children. A new building in Davenant Street accommodated 1000 children.
The school continued expanding. In 1818 larger buildings housed 100 boys and 100 girls. A commercial or grammar school opened in Leman Street in 1858. In 1888 the Whitechapel and Davenant charities merged. They formed The Foundation School.
The impressive Renaissance building was added in 1896. It featured a magnificent assembly hall still standing today. The school faced challenges. During World War II it was evacuated and used by the Heavy Rescue Service. In 1944 it became Davenant Foundation Grammar School for Boys. It remained so until 1980.
A significant milestone was reached in 1965. The school relocated to Loughton Essex. This move was at the invitation of the Essex County Council. The Queen Mother celebrated the school’s 300th anniversary in 1980. The school then became co-educational. It also became a Language College and a Sports College.
Today Davenant Foundation School continues its legacy. It’s an academy and thrives in Loughton. It has educated many notable individuals. These include politicians like James Brokenshire and Leslie Solley. Famous alumni also include actress and singer Naomi Scott. The school has even had four rugby tours to different continents. Its story is one of resilience adaptation and unwavering commitment to education. It is a testament to the vision of Reverend Davenant and generations of educators and students who have shaped its destiny. The school’s journey exemplifies its motto Nurturing mind body and spirit.
