A colossal bronze figure dominates the landscape. This is the Danmarksmonumentet. It stands proudly. Yet its story is one of both triumph and tragedy.

The Danmarksmonumentet or Golden Wedding Monument was created to celebrate King Christian IX and Queen Louise’s golden wedding anniversary in 1892. The royal couple were known as Europe’s in-laws. Many of their children reigned as kings and queens across the continent. The sculpture itself was unveiled in 1897. This was in front of the newly inaugurated Statens Museum for Kunst. The cost was approximately 96000 kroner. Most of this was raised through public donations.

The monument’s centerpiece is Mother Denmark. She stands atop a column. She wears a cloak and crown. She also bears a bronze-age clasp and the Dagmark cross from the Middle Ages. In one arm she holds a golden horn. This is a symbol from the Germanic Iron Age. Her other hand rests on a shield bearing the Danish lions.

Surrounding the central column are medallions. They depict the royal family. Below these are three bronze reliefs. They show important events in the lives of the king and queen. One scene shows their wedding. Another depicts their son Wilhelm receiving the crown of Greece. Three lions adorn the base.

Three bronze plates are at the bottom. One bears an inscription: Deep Devotion and True Love erected this monument in honor of King Christian IX and Queen Louise’s Golden Wedding on May 26 1892. The other two plates remain uninscribed.

The Danmarksmonumentet’s reception was mixed. It was initially met with ridicule and scorn. It was later relocated in 1919-1920 to a less prominent location in Østre Anlæg. This move itself cost approximately 100000 kroner. That’s more than the initial creation cost. Today the monument stands partially hidden. It’s nestled among lush foliage during the summer months. It remains a complex and intriguing monument to a bygone era. A testament to the changing tastes of time and the enduring legacy of a royal couple. A silent witness to the history it celebrates and the controversy it inspired.
