A chilling wind whispers tales of the Danmark-Ekspeditionen Stone. Here, before this memorial, echoes of a tragic yet triumphant expedition reverberate. The Danmark-Ekspeditionen Stone commemorates the ill-fated explorers of the Denmark expedition to Greenland’s Northeast Coast (1906–1908). Led by Ludvig Mylius-Erichsen, the expedition aimed to map the uncharted coastline between Cape Bridgman and Cape Bismarck. The Danmark, the expedition’s ship, established its base at Danmarkshavn. From there, Mylius-Erichsen, along with Niels Peter Høeg Hagen and Jørgen Brønlund, embarked on a dogsled journey to find the so-called “Peary Channel”. Their journey led them to discover that Peary Land was not an island, as previously claimed, but part of Greenland itself. Sadly, this discovery came at a great cost. Delayed by their explorations, the three men were trapped by the harsh Arctic summer. They attempted a return journey in September, but their supplies dwindled. Hagen and Mylius-Erichsen perished from exhaustion near Nioghalvfjerdsfjorden. Brønlund, the sole survivor, managed to reach Lambert Land, where he too succumbed to the elements. His diary, found with his body, revealed the tragic fate of his companions. This Danmark-Ekspeditionen Stone serves not only as a memorial to their sacrifice but also as a testament to their remarkable achievements. They charted unknown territories, corrected geographical misconceptions, and contributed significantly to scientific knowledge. Their names are forever etched in the history of Arctic exploration.
