Village in the city. That’s the concept of Dangin Puri Kangin. Here in Denpasar.

Before Dangin Puri Kangin existed this area was lush rice fields. The local government wanted to build housing and offices. The fertile land was acquired. But construction was delayed. The land wasn’t used for rice. It wasn’t used for housing either. Locals called this idle land “karang eneng”. Over time “Karang Eneng” evolved into Kreneng.

Soon housing offices and schools were built here. Kreneng was then known as Kota Baru or New City.

Dangin Puri was the main village. It was divided into several villages. These included Dangin Puri Kauh. Also Dangin Puri Kaja. Plus Dangin Puri Kelod. And of course Dangin Puri Kangin.

Dangin Puri Kangin officially became a village on June 1 1982. It originally had three Banjar Dinas. These were RK Kreneng, Banjar Merta Nadhi and Banjar Kertha Buana. These were joined by four Banjar Suka Duka. Dangin Puri Kangin then consisted of seven Banjar. Plus one police dormitory.

RK Kreneng became Banjar Kreneng. There was also Banjar Kreneng Kaja. Then Banjar Merta Nadhi. Followed by Banjar Kertha Buana. Also Banjar Kertha Buana Kaja. And Banjar Merta Rauh. Lastly Banjar Merta Rauh Kaja.

With Dangin Puri Kangin’s establishment village governance began. The village head’s office was at Jalan Anggrek No 16.

In 2004 Denpasar Utara subdistrict was formed. Dangin Puri Kangin became part of it. The village head is now called Perbekel.

Dangin Puri Kangin embraces digital technology. The village launched a village application. It is called M-Desa. The slogan is “Sewaka Prajahita”. This means serving with a sincere heart.

M-Desa started in November 2013. It was included in the village’s development plan. The goal is faster service using technology. The app uses one data system. It also uses one management system. And one budget system.

Citizens responded positively. They downloaded the app. Services became faster. Village officials are responsive. The village office is less busy. People don’t need to visit for services. The Android and iOS app puts village services at your fingertips.

The M-Desa app has nine features. These include letter services and BPJS checks. There is also a village map. Plus a village gallery. You can find Bumdes products too. There are links to the village radio. Plus the village website. And information on Bali Mandara Eye Hospital.

In 2018 the village welcomed 63 delegates from 20 countries. They learned about the smart village program and M-Desa.

One delegate from Nigeria praised Dangin Puri Kangin’s innovation. She said the M-Desa app makes it easy to access village programs and services. She suggested applying this concept elsewhere to help communities. Dangin Puri Kangin shows how a village can thrive in the heart of the city.
