Danderhall was once a hive of activity, a mining village providing manpower for the surrounding collieries. Think of Edmonstone to the northwest, Sheriffhall to the southeast, Woolmet to the east, and Monktonhall beyond. These mines, now silent, fueled the heart of Danderhall. Monktonhall, the last of these giants, breathed its last breath in 1998. Today, Danderhall stands as a testament to its resilient spirit. Its 1,200 homes, once primarily council housing, are now largely privately owned, marking a shift in the village’s identity. Danderhall retains its community charm. It boasts a library, a primary school for the next generation, two churches offering spiritual solace – a Church of Scotland and the Calvary Chapel of Edinburgh.
