“Tanjenong” lofty mountains. That’s what the indigenous Woiwurrung people called this place. Long before European settlement Dandenong was densely forested. Red gum trees dominated the landscape. It was a significant area for the Woiwurrung. They held important meetings and ceremonies here.

Today Dandenong is a bustling southeastern suburb of Melbourne. It’s a major transport hub. It’s also a significant manufacturing center for Victoria. The 1950s saw rapid expansion. Dandenong became a major manufacturing and commercial center. The post office was modernized in 1960. Later came a three-storey office building for AMP in 1966. Then a new railway station in 1975. Holden even opened a plant in 1956.

Albanian immigrants started settling in Dandenong in the early 1960s. They built the town’s first mosque in 1985. Dandenong’s development has involved significant urban renewal efforts. The Melbourne 2030 strategy played a key role. The revitalization aimed to transform Dandenong. It aimed to make it a vibrant economic and service hub.

Millions were invested in infrastructure upgrades. The Australian Taxation Office a new civic center and a state government services hub were built. The redevelopment of the Dandenong Livestock Market is a great example. It’s now Metro 3175. A mixed-use development with homes cafes and restaurants.

The Dandenong Town Hall built in 1890 is now the Drum Theatre. A performing arts center. Its distinctive red drum-shaped addition is a landmark.
