Ever wondered how a simple dream could lead to the birth of a vibrant community? That is the story of Dandenong Church of Christ. It stands here on David Street as a testament to faith and community.
The church’s story began in September 1892. Mrs J B Moysey had a dream. She longed for a church in Dandenong. Sadly her failing health prevented her weekly trips to Berwick. Instead she gathered a few local people. They held a Communion Service every Sunday. And so Dandenong Church of Christ was born from humble beginnings.
Since its inception the church community has worshipped in three different chapels. The latest chapel opened in 1990. This is the very building we stand before now. It was recently refurbished in 2019.
Dandenong Church of Christ has always had an active presence. In the 20th century they conducted several tent missions. These missions took place in the heart of Dandenong CBD. Many people found faith. They heard the Word of God preached publicly at these events. In the 1970s and 80s the Jesus Gang played an important role. They shared the Gospel with families facing poverty in Dandenong North.
Today the story of Dandenong Church of Christ continues. It unfolds as they respond to those from diverse cultural backgrounds. The church feels called to be a house of prayer for all nations.
Dandenong Church of Christ belongs to the Churches of Christ in Victoria and Tasmania. This is part of a larger Global Family of Christian Churches. These churches are not a denomination. Instead they are a movement. They are committed to the unity of all Christians. Their aim is to truly be the Body of Christ. The movement began over 200 years ago. It started in both the UK and the US. It was a protest against legalism and authoritarianism in other churches.
A distinct ethos defines Churches of Christ. In essentials unity. In non-essentials liberty. And in all things love. Each Church of Christ is self-governing. However they come together voluntarily. They meet on a state and national level for conferences. They also cooperate to carry out functions too big for local congregations. This includes training ministers and supporting overseas missions.
Membership is by profession of faith and baptism. Baptism is conducted by believers. Those old enough to make a commitment to Jesus Christ. Baptism is by total immersion in water. This mirrors the practice in the New Testament church. It symbolizes the Death Burial and Resurrection of Jesus. The Lord’s Supper or Communion is observed weekly. All who claim Christ as their Saviour may participate. It is an expression of identity as God’s people. They remember the atoning sacrifice of Christ. They await his return to earth.
Dandenong Church of Christ seeks to be immersed in God’s presence. It wants to live fruitfully as followers of Jesus. The church is eager to share God’s goodness and grace with others.
The current elders are Michelle Johnson who is the Chair Les Russell who is the Treasurer Jenny Grainger who is the secretary and Morag Thorne. Their leadership guides the church.
