It’s a powerful artwork, but it also tells a tragic tale. The Danaide is a daughter of King Danaos from Greek mythology. She and her 49 sisters were punished for murdering their husbands on their wedding night by being forced in the underworld to fill a bottomless container with water for all eternity. The Danaide, sculpted by Johannes Clausen Bjerg in 1923, shows this endless labor. Her form is strong and elegant, yet the weight of her task is clear on her face. Look at the heavy vessel she carries on her head. It reflects the burden of doing something futile, a task that can never be finished. The statue stands a meter and 85 centimeters tall. It was owned by the Danish businessman Axel Kier until his death in 1969, when it was gifted to the city of Aarhus. The Danaide serves as a powerful reminder even today, that even with the best intentions, sometimes we can be trapped in a cycle of ceaseless action, leading nowhere.
