The Dana Research Centre and Library has a story. It began in 2003 as the Dana Centre. Sir Richard MacCormac designed it. Initially, it was a public venue. People came here for debates about contemporary science. The Science Museum ran it. The British Science Association also had offices here. This was before its transformation. The Dana Centre wasn’t directly linked to the main museum. It stood on Queen’s Gate.
Fast forward to late 2015. The space was reborn. It became the Dana Library and Research Centre. The goal was clear. To create a world-class research environment. It brought together the Science Museum’s research department and its library. Access to the archives became a priority.
Now, let’s talk access. The Dana Research Centre and Library welcomes researchers and visitors. Access is currently by appointment. You can visit on Thursdays and Fridays from 11:00 to 17:00. Remember, it’s closed on Bank Holidays and during the Christmas and New Year period.
Inside the Dana Research Centre and Library, you will find nearly 7000 volumes. They cover the history of science, technology, and medicine. Philosophical and social aspects are also included. Journals are available in both print and digital formats. Most core titles are accessible electronically.
Keep in mind that most of the Science Museum Group’s library is located in Wiltshire. It is at the National Collection Centre. Ordering materials in advance is recommended. About 99% of the collection is stored there.
