The church, a sanctuary for women of noble lineage, opened its doors in 1735. Sadly, World War II brought unimaginable destruction. Bombs rained down on Munich, leaving Damenstiftskirche St. Anna in ruins. The outer walls, mere skeletons of their former selves, barely survived. But amidst the rubble, a glimmer of hope emerged. The baroque interior, a testament to the Asam brothers’ genius, miraculously endured. It was a sign, some whispered, that faith, like art, could withstand even the darkest of times. Decades passed before the restoration began. Using old photographs as their guide, artisans meticulously reconstructed the damaged sections, breathing life back into the wounded building. In 1980, Damenstiftskirche St. Anna, though forever scarred by the war, reopened its doors. Today, the murals, recreated in stark black and white, stand as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between destruction and preservation.
