What is now a museum wasn’t always a quiet place of reflection. The Dallas County Courthouse, also known as Old Red, was once a bustling center of justice and the scene of a historical event that shook the nation. This magnificent building, constructed from striking red sandstone in 1892, originally served as the seat of Dallas County’s legal system. Designed by architect Max A. Orlopp, Jr., Old Red boasts a Richardsonian Romanesque architectural style, evident in its sturdy arches, intricate carvings, and the once-imposing clock tower that dominated the Dallas skyline. Sadly, the original tower met its demise in 1919 due to structural issues. However, during the 2005-2007 renovations, the tower was reconstructed to its former glory, adding to Old Red’s charm. President John F. Kennedy’s motorcade passed by this very courthouse on that fateful day in November 1963, just minutes before the assassination. Decades later, a new courthouse was built in 1966, and Old Red was transformed into a museum in 2007. Now known as the Old Red Museum of Dallas County History and Culture, it stands as a testament to the city’s vibrant past, offering a glimpse into the heart of old Dallas.
