Established in 1582 Dalkeith High School boasts a rich history. Initially known as Dalkeith Grammar School it occupied a spot on the High Street. Its early years saw renowned figures like Archibald Pitcairne and Alexander Wedderburn among its pupils. They went on to achieve great things. Pitcairne became a famous physician. Wedderburn rose to the esteemed position of Lord Chancellor.
The school’s reputation for classical learning flourished for over a century. It was considered one of Scotland’s best seminaries. French German Italian and mathematics were also part of the curriculum. This broadened the education beyond the traditional classics.
In 1914 the school moved to King’s Park School. A new building designed by William Scott opened in 1940 on Newmills Road. A large extension followed in 1960. The architects were Reid & Forbes. This new school was state-of-the-art for its time. It reflected the evolving educational landscape.
Sadly the old building fell into disrepair. Asbestos contamination hampered reuse efforts. Demolition followed in 2012. The decision was controversial. Midlothian Council faced criticism over expenses for security and lighting. There were also failed attempts to sell the property for redevelopment.
Dalkeith High School’s legacy extends far beyond its physical structures. Its alumni include notable figures like meteorologist James Stagg and Marxist geographer Neil Smith. The musician Fish also counts Dalkeith High School as his alma mater. The remarkable achievements of these individuals showcase the school’s lasting impact.
In 2003 a significant chapter began. Dalkeith High School integrated with St David’s Roman Catholic High School and Saltersgate School. This created Scotland’s first joint secondary school campus. This innovative approach marked a new era in education. It combined resources and opportunities for students. The initial segregation of students due to concerns about integration ultimately faded. The campus eventually became a unified learning environment.
Dalkeith High School stands today. A testament to its enduring legacy. Its story is one of transformation adaptation and continued commitment to providing quality education. The school’s past achievements shape its present. It continues to prepare students for success in a rapidly changing world.
