Dakota Unitarian Universalist Church. A name that echoes with a spirit of resilience and adaptation. You might be surprised to know that this church, now a beacon of community and acceptance, didn’t even have a permanent home for many years. It all began in 1988, a humble beginning with Reverend Eric Haugen leading a small group of believers in an elementary school in Eagan. Their vision – to create a liberal religious space in the south of the river suburbs. This vision propelled them through years of change, as the Dakota Unitarian Universalist Church moved from one rented space to another, holding onto their faith and community spirit. Each location, from Eagan to Burnsville and Rosemount, played a part in shaping the church’s identity. This nomadic period ended in 2002 when they finally purchased a building in Burnsville. It was a community effort. Members poured their hearts and souls into transforming the space, while other Unitarian Universalist churches like Mankato, Minnesota Valley, and White Bear generously donated furniture and supplies. Their first service in the new building in 2003 was a testament to their unwavering commitment and the power of collective effort. The Dakota Unitarian Universalist Church journey wasn’t without its challenges. They faced dwindling numbers, particularly in their children’s programs, but their dedication to inclusivity never wavered. They adapted, offering unique programs and welcoming people from all walks of life. In a unique twist of fate, the church building itself became a symbol of their compassionate spirit. In 2016, they sold it to Sage Prairie, a drug and alcohol treatment center, choosing to support their mission while continuing to hold services there. This act of generosity speaks volumes about the heart of the Dakota Unitarian Universalist Church. Today, they continue to evolve and thrive, embracing creativity, art, and community engagement at their new location in Eagan. The Dakota Unitarian Universalist Church stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith, adaptability, and unwavering compassion.
