Hidden within the tranquil embrace of Mount Misen, lies Daisho-in Temple. A timeless sanctuary, Daisho-in Temple has witnessed over twelve centuries of history unfold. Founded in 806 by the revered monk Kūkai, also known as Kōbō-Daishi, Daisho-in Temple stands as the oldest temple on the sacred island of Miyajima. The temple’s location, nestled at the foot of Mount Misen and just behind the iconic Itsukushima Shrine, makes it an integral part of the island’s spiritual landscape. Daisho-in Temple served as the head temple of the Omuro school of Shingon Buddhism. It played a pivotal role in the Itsukushima Shrine’s festivals as its head priest. The temple’s significance extends beyond its religious duties. It acts as the center of Buddhist faith on Miyajima. It also oversees the ruins of Gumonji, where Kōbō-Daishi practiced esoteric teachings on Mount Misen. A remarkable feature of Daisho-in Temple is the Henjokutsu Cave, located beneath the Daishido Hall. Inside, you’ll find 88 statues, each representing a sacred site of the Shikoku Pilgrimage. The sand on the cave floor is gathered from each of these 88 sites. Walking upon this sacred sand is believed to bestow the same blessings as completing the entire pilgrimage. The temple grounds are also home to the Garden of Five Hundred Arhats. Here, a multitude of Jizo statues, each bearing a unique expression of joy, anger, sorrow, or happiness, create a captivating spectacle. These statues, known as the Five Hundred Arhats, are modeled after the individuals who participated in a Buddhist council. As you explore Daisho-in Temple, take note of the Maniden Hall. This unique hall is dedicated to oni, Japanese ogre demons, believed to be incarnations of Buddha. Daisho-in Temple’s history intertwines with significant figures. Emperor Toba designated it as a place of prayer for national peace and security. Centuries later, Emperor Meiji sought solace within its walls during his visit to Itsukushima Shrine. The temple also holds a special connection to Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The Sengoku Period warlord offered prayers to Fudo Myoo, the Buddhist wisdom king enshrined within the temple’s Chokugando Hall, seeking victory and safe passage during his Korean campaign.
