Operation Anthropoid. Does the name send chills down your spine? This plaque commemorates the Czechoslovak Government-in-Exile Military Intelligence Service. It operated from this very building.

This seemingly ordinary building at Porchester Gate in Bayswater was once a hub of resistance. It was the strategic center for Czech intelligence during World War II. Let’s delve into the story behind the Czechoslovak Government-in-Exile Military Intelligence Service plaque.

From 1940 to 1945, this building housed the Czechoslovak Government-in-Exile Military Intelligence Service. From here, brave men and women plotted against Nazi oppression. They worked tirelessly to free their homeland. Their efforts were focused on restoring the Republic to its 1937 boundaries.

The most daring plan formulated within these walls was Operation Anthropoid. This operation aimed to assassinate Reinhard Heydrich. Heydrich was a high-ranking Nazi official and key architect of the Holocaust. He was the Reich Protector of Bohemia and Moravia.

In October 1941, the seeds of Operation Anthropoid were sown right here. Agents Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš were trained and dispatched. These brave agents parachuted into occupied Czechoslovakia. Their mission was fraught with danger.

The assassination attempt took place in Prague on May 27, 1942. Gabčík and Kubiš ambushed Heydrich’s car. A grenade was thrown. Heydrich died from his injuries a few days later. This act of defiance shook the Nazi regime.

The consequences were devastating for the Czech people. The Nazis retaliated brutally. They eradicated the villages of Lidice and Ležáky. Despite the terrible cost, Operation Anthropoid became a symbol of resistance.

The Czechoslovak Government-in-Exile, based here, was recognized by the Allies. It was deemed the legitimate government of Czechoslovakia. President Edvard Beneš led the government from exile. Jan Šrámek served as prime minister.

This plaque serves as a reminder of their courage. The City of Westminster erected it. Embassies of the Czech and Slovak Republics support it. The Free Czechoslovak Air Force Association and the Jan Kaplan archive also stand behind it.

The Czechoslovak Government-in-Exile Military Intelligence Service plaque was unveiled on Czech National Day. It stands as a testament to the resilience. It honors the determination of the Czech and Slovak people. They never surrendered hope for a free Czechoslovakia.

Though a memorial plaque was thought to be lost, this plaque ensures their story remains. It reminds us that even in the darkest times, courage and resistance can prevail. The bravery of the Czechoslovak Government-in-Exile Military Intelligence Service must never be forgotten.
