Have you ever felt the quiet strength of ancient trees? Welcome to the Czabai Kert a hidden gem in Erd Parkvaros. This small 0 66 hectare haven nestled between Radnai and Bikszadi streets is a testament to nature’s resilience.
The Czabai Kert isn’t just a park it’s a nature reserve. Protected since 1977 its purpose is to preserve the area’s original state. This includes a remarkable oak forest a sanctuary for birds and a place for quiet contemplation. The Czabai Kert offers visitors a lasting aesthetic experience. It also provides a chance to observe the natural development of the forest.
The Czabai Kert’s most characteristic trees are the sessile oak Quercus robur and the pedunculate oak Quercus petraea. Can you spot the difference? The sessile oak’s acorns sit directly on the branch unlike the pedunculate oak. Sessile oak leaves have very short stalks while pedunculate oak shoots leaves and buds are fuzzy. The Czabai Kert also boasts field maples Acer campestre and common walnuts Juglans regia.
These 50 to 70 year old trees are a rare relic of the region’s past. Their survival and healthy growth are largely thanks to the conscientious care of the owner. Czabai Balazs has protected the trees providing essential basic care.
Currently there are 238 trees in the Czabai Kert. They stand 14 to 22 meters tall with trunks 30 to 55 centimeters in diameter. Unfortunately these magnificent trees are now severely damaged by mistletoe. This invasive plant has led to the death of many trees.
Despite these challenges the Czabai Kert remains a special place. The Hungarian Ornithological Society recognized it in 2004 as a Bird-Friendly Garden. This small pocket of nature is a reminder of what can be preserved even in a bustling city. Czabai Balazs welcomes visitors by prior arrangement.
