Established in 1892 Cypress Lawn Memorial Park stands before you. A haven of quiet reflection it’s more than just a cemetery. It’s a living testament to San Francisco’s rich history. Hamden Holmes Noble a Civil War veteran and member of the San Francisco Stock Exchange had a vision. He envisioned a tranquil rural cemetery far from the city’s bustle. Cypress Lawn was his answer.

He saw the problem with San Francisco’s overcrowded cemeteries. They were becoming eyesores. His friend urged him to create a solution. Noble’s solution was Cypress Lawn. It was established a safe distance from the city. San Francisco later banned all burials. It even passed a law evicting the dead. Over 35000 people were later reinterred at Cypress Lawn.

Cypress Lawn wasn’t just a place for the dead. It was a carefully planned landscape. Noble traveled extensively researching cemetery styles. He chose horticulture that transformed the land into a serene garden. It’s now an internationally certified arboretum. The original 47 acres have expanded. The West Campus added in 1901. Hillside Gardens opened in 2006. Olivet Gardens joined the complex in 2020.

Notable figures rest here. Members of the Hearst family are buried here. So are many prominent San Franciscans. The cemetery has a magnificent granite entrance gate. It was designed by B McDougall’s firm in 1892 and completed in 1893. It features Mission Revival elements. A crematory was built in 1893. Sadly it was destroyed in the 1957 earthquake. The Noble Chapel and original columbarium still stand. They are beautiful examples of architecture. The Lakeside Columbarium remains unfinished. Construction stopped in 1930 because of the Great Depression.

Cypress Lawn’s story is woven into the fabric of San Francisco. It’s a place where history and nature intertwine. It’s a place of remembrance a place of peace. It’s a place where the past lives on. Cypress Lawn Memorial Park a true San Francisco landmark.
