What’s in a name? Sometimes, a name holds the very essence of a place, whispering tales of its past. Here in Cyinzuzi, the name itself echoes a peculiar story, a tale of a prince, a cow, and an abundance of calabashes. Cyinzuzi, you see, isn’t just a name; it’s a window into the heart of this region in Rwanda’s Rulindo District. The story begins with Prince Forongo, a renowned warrior who led Rwandan troops against invaders during the reign of King Mibambwe I Sekarongoro Mutabazi. Before his military exploits, Forongo was a herder. He journeyed to this very area in search of pasture for his starving cattle, driven here by a severe drought. Upon arrival, he built a shelter and settled in. Then, one of his cows gave birth. Forongo found himself in a predicament. He had no calabashes to collect the precious milk. He wandered, searching for a solution. To his astonishment, every household he encountered had calabashes displayed prominently on their porches or inside their homes. Hanging alongside these vessels were gourds used for making and storing traditional beverages. Forongo also noticed the abundant growth of calabash plants covering the hillsides, their fruits promising a continuous supply of these essential containers. Overwhelmed by the prevalence of these gourds, plants known locally as “inzuzi,” Forongo christened this place Cyinzuzi, meaning “place of calabashes”. The name stuck, becoming a tribute to the resourcefulness and unique culture of the people who lived here. Even today, the people of Cyinzuzi honor their namesake. The local SACCO, a microfinance institution, is called Igisabo SACCO, “Igisabo” being the Kinyarwanda word for calabash. The tradition of cultivating calabash gourds continues, with residents proudly displaying their calabashes and the drinks they hold. This area is also embracing modern agricultural practices, evidenced by the establishment of a coffee processing plant. So, as you stand here in Cyinzuzi, remember the tale of Prince Forongo, his cow, and the abundance of calabashes. It’s a story woven into the very fabric of this place, a story that gives Cyinzuzi its unique identity.
