Can a cathedral rise from a mess hall? The Cubao Cathedral stands as proof that it can. This magnificent structure, officially known as the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of Cubao, isn’t just a place of worship. It is a testament to the resilience and growth of the community. The Cubao Cathedral’s story begins humbly in 1935 with SVD priests serving a small farming community. Initially, mass was held in a chapel near the present Cubao roundabout, dedicated to San Isidro Labrador. Later, services moved to a repurposed quonset mess hall, a relic of World War II left by the combined US-Philippine Commonwealth Armed Forces. The Cubao Cathedral we see today wasn’t built overnight. In 1949, the small chapel was rededicated to the Immaculate Conception. Then, on July 15, 1950, it was elevated to parish status. The area remained under SVD administration for decades, due to its proximity to the Christ the King Mission Seminary. A major shift occurred in 1990. The SVD handed over administration of the parish to the Archdiocese of Manila. This transition marked a new chapter for the Cubao Cathedral. With the establishment of the Diocese of Cubao in 2003, the parish became a cathedral. Extensive renovations transformed the structure, solidifying its role as the bishop’s seat. Even amidst this growth, the Cubao Cathedral remains a parish within the Vicariate of the Holy Family. A famous moment for the Cubao Cathedral arrived in 2014, with the wedding of actors Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera. Dantes, having been christened there, chose this place for a lavish ceremony attended by prominent figures, including then-President Benigno S. Aquino III. The Cubao Cathedral has witnessed not just spiritual growth but the changing tides of Manila itself. It has evolved alongside the city, from a humble chapel to a grand cathedral, reflecting the enduring spirit of its community.
