A Skokie Swift train sets off for Dempster Street through Howard Yard, looking north. This sprawling railway yard just north of Howard station is the largest of its kind in Chicago. It’s a vital hub for the CTA. Howard Yard has been a key part of Chicago’s public transportation system since its opening in 1919, when it gradually replaced the functions of Wilson Yard, until the latter was destroyed by fire in 1996. It’s fascinating to think about the evolution of this yard, where trains have been running for more than a century. In 1990, a train derailed in this yard, disrupting rail traffic to Evanston. While Howard Yard is a busy place, with numerous tracks, it’s also a place of great historical importance. The yard was rebuilt between 1991 and 1993 and now stores cars from the Yellow, Red, and Purple Lines of the Chicago Transit Authority. While many may see a busy yard full of trains, the CTA Howard Yard is a key component of Chicago’s transportation system and it represents a fascinating glimpse into the city’s past.
