From the peak of Csúcs-hegy, three distinct peaks pierce the sky. Csúcs-hegy itself stands as a sentinel, overlooking the bustling city of Budapest. This prominent peak, reaching 452 meters, offers a panoramic vista. It marks the boundary between Budapest’s II and III districts. The mountain’s main mass belongs to the III district, with the district boundary running along the southwestern slope. Csúcs-hegy has a rich history, intertwined with the growth of Budapest. In the Middle Ages, it was known as Hegyes-hegy or Csúcsos-hegy. Its first documented mention dates back to 1212, appearing in a boundary description as Mons Hyges. Some 18th-century maps refer to it as Gercse-hegy (Mons Gercse). This is because of the village of Gercse, situated on its southwestern slope. During the 20th century, Csúcs-hegy became a beloved destination for excursions. On its northern slope, in 1925-1926, the Budapest Tourist Association constructed a tourist hostel. Initially accommodating 30-40 people, its capacity was later expanded to over 50 in the 1930s. Sadly, after the change of regime in 1992, the Csúcs-hegy tourist hostel closed. Its memory lives on in a memorial plaque and the name of Menedékház Street. Hikers will appreciate that a section of the National Blue Trail, route number 14, traverses the slopes of Csúcs-hegy. Several other marked tourist trails also cross the mountain, inviting exploration of the surrounding natural beauty. Remnants of two Roman villas and a watchtower have been unearthed near Csúcs-hegy. This proximity to Aquincum suggests a vibrant past. Other archaeological finds from the Late Bronze Age and the Hungarian conquest era further enrich its historical tapestry. Csúcs-hegy’s geological composition is equally fascinating. Its main mass consists of Triassic limestone, while its gentle slopes are formed from Kiscell clay. Standing here, atop Csúcs-hegy, one can truly sense the weight of history and the enduring power of nature.
