Few know the story behind this monument. We are standing before the Csillaghegyi országzászló Obelisk. This obelisk is more than just stone and metal. It’s a symbol of a nation’s spirit. A symbol of resilience.

The story of the Csillaghegyi országzászló Obelisk begins in a time of great change. After World War I, Hungary faced significant territorial losses. This was a painful moment in Hungarian history. People felt a deep sense of loss and displacement.

In 1928, Nándor Urmánczy founded the Országzászló Mozgalom. He wanted to create memorials to commemorate the lost territories. The first such memorial was erected in Szabadság tér. Soon hundreds of similar monuments appeared across the country. Csillaghegy was no exception.

In 1941, the Csillaghegyi országzászló was inaugurated. It stood proudly in a park near the HÉV railway line. Békásmegyer was its immediate neighbor. It was a place for people to remember and reflect.

But the Csillaghegyi országzászló’s story doesn’t end there. After 1945, the monument was demolished. The park was transformed into a playground. A nearby street was named after Flora Martos. She was a member of the illegal communist party in the 1930s.

In 1975, a new sculpture was erected. It was called the Liberation Memorial. István Szabó Jr. created it. The statue depicted a winged female figure holding an olive branch. At the center of the olive branch was a five-pointed star.

The Liberation Memorial was not without controversy. In the early 1990s, it was slated for removal. The five-pointed star was a symbol of a bygone era. However, some local officials opposed the decision. In the summer of 1992, the statue was toppled.

An investigation followed. János Bodrácska, Budapest’s police chief, concluded that the act was political. It was an expression of dissatisfaction. Today, the Csillaghegyi országzászló Obelisk stands as a reminder of these turbulent times.

This place is more than just a monument. It tells a story of loss. It tells a story of resilience. It tells a story of political change. It reminds us that history is complex. It reminds us that memory is powerful.
