“A grand building it stands before you” This is the Cserkesz utcai zsinagóga Hitközségi székház és lakóház. Built between 1909 and 1912 it was once a vibrant hub for the local Jewish community. Architect Richard Schönheil designed this magnificent structure. Its Art Nouveau style is truly breathtaking.
The Cserkesz utcai zsinagóga was more than just a place of worship. It housed a school a social club and even a soup kitchen. This provided vital services to the community. Imagine the bustling activity within these walls. The sounds of prayers studies laughter. A testament to the rich and vibrant culture of the Jewish community in Kőbánya.
A fire in 1920 destroyed the roof. But the community rebuilt it swiftly. This showcased their resilience and strong communal spirit. It highlights the importance of this place in their lives. Sadly in 1964 the synagogue was sold. It fell into disrepair. It served various purposes for a time. It was even a warehouse for the Hungarian Television. But in 1989 a Christian community acquired it. They undertook a complete restoration. The building now stands as a testament to both its Jewish past and its present Christian purpose.
Today the Cserkesz utcai zsinagóga is known as the Mindenki Temploma Everybody’s Temple. It’s an ecumenical space welcoming people of all faiths. It remains a place of community. A testament to the power of faith and the enduring legacy of this remarkable building. The building also houses the Emberbarát Foundation’s Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Institute. A new chapter written into this historic building’s story.
