A sail against the sky. That’s the Csergezán Pál kilátó. This isn’t just any lookout tower. It’s a tribute. A tribute to Pál Csergezán a nature painter whose life was as dramatic as the landscapes he captured.

The Csergezán Pál kilátó stands atop Nagy-Kopasz Hill. At 559 meters it’s a vantage point offering breathtaking views. Imagine the Buda Hills stretching before you. The Pilis mountains rise in the distance. On a clear day you can even see the Mátra and the Börzsöny mountains.

Pál Csergezán was born near the Ukrainian border. His love for horses and animals led him to Budapest. He studied design and graphic arts. His life took many twists and turns. World War II saw him as a prisoner of war in the Soviet Union. His time in Sumy influenced his artwork. He later traveled the world working in Iran Canada and Sweden.

He wasn’t always popular in his home country. His hunting and nature scenes found more appreciation abroad. He saw himself more as an artisan than a great Hungarian artist. He painted for foreign clients. He cultivated a following among hunters and hikers.

The Csergezán Foundation was established after his death in 1996. It honors his legacy by awarding prizes to nature painters. His ashes lie near the lookout tower next to the Anna hunting lodge.

The tower itself is quite special. Built from larch wood in 2006 it’s 23.5 meters tall. It has about 100 steps. Because heavy machinery couldn’t be used the heavy larch elements were lifted by hand. It stands as a testament to human effort and artistic vision.

Climb the steps. Feel the wood beneath your feet. Breathe in the fresh air. From this vantage point you can almost feel Pál Csergezán’s spirit. He painted this world. Now you can see it as he did. This is more than a lookout. It’s a journey into the heart of Hungarian nature and the life of a remarkable artist.
