What secrets does Csepel-Ófalu hold? Csepel-Ófalu whispers stories of resilience. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of a community. It was rebuilt after the devastating flood of 1838. The original village of Csepel, located in the present-day freeport area, was swept away by the raging waters. The residents, undeterred, relocated to higher ground. They established the new village we know today as Csepel-Ófalu, meaning “Old Village”. Csepel-Ófalu became the heart of Csepel. Even in the 19th century, the old village site was repopulated, showcasing the deep connection to this land. Csepel-Ófalu, part of Budapest’s 21st district, rests on Csepel Island in the Danube River. The district is unique. It’s the only one in Budapest that belongs neither to Pest nor Buda. The Danube borders Csepel to the west. The Ráckevei-Duna, a branch of the Danube, flows along its eastern edge. To the south, the communities of Szigetszentmiklós and Lakihegy mark its boundaries. Csepel Island, and consequently Csepel-Ófalu, carries a rich history. The island was named after Árpád’s horse groom. Árpád was a key figure in the Hungarian migrations. The island served as a royal retreat during the Middle Ages. It was even a traditional wedding gift for future Hungarian queens after 1484. This tradition highlights Csepel Island’s significance and beauty. Csepel-Ófalu, once a working-class borough, is now a blend of housing estates and middle-class garden suburbs. The history of Csepel-Ófalu is a story of transformation. It is a story of a community rebuilding and evolving in the face of adversity, while holding onto its historical significance.
