Once upon a time, the area now known as Csepel-Királyerdő was a royal forest. Let’s wander through this unique part of Budapest together. It has a captivating past. Csepel-Királyerdő is a district in Budapest’s 21st district.

This district is on Csepel Island. The island is in the Danube. That makes it quite special. Csepel-Királyerdő is neither in Buda nor in Pest.

Do you know where the name Csepel-Királyerdő comes from? Királyerdő means Royal Forest. In the 1930s, the Magyar-Holland Bank began dividing the area into parcels. This area was once part of a royal forest estate. Thus the name Csepel-Királyerdő. In 2012, the city officially renamed Királyerdő to Csepel-Királyerdő.

Let us consider its location. Csepel-Királyerdő is located on the southern edge of Budapest. It shares borders with several streets. These streets are Szebeni utca, Kolozsvári utca and Határ út. The Rácevei-Duna branch of the Danube also forms a boundary. Other borders are Királyerdő út, Tihanyi utca, Szentmiklósi út, Völgy utca, Erdőalja út and Szent István út.

Did you notice anything unusual as we walked here? The ground isn’t flat. It’s higher than the surrounding areas. Its surface is between 115 and 130 meters above sea level. This is due to the sandy soil. Because of this, some buildings stand at different heights.

Ever get lost around here? Csepel-Királyerdő’s street layout is notoriously complex. Its chaotic nature has both geological and historical roots.

Csepel-Királyerdő is also a treasure trove of nature. Csepel district has two nature reserves. One is the Kis-Duna Bay. The other is Tamariska Hill. These areas protect rare species. These include species in the Red Book. There are also Pannonian endemic species. Sadly, part of Tamariska Hill was divided up. It was sold off to local government officials.

Csepel-Királyerdő also has a rich sporting history. The Csepel Bath opened in 1919. Also, the Csepel SC canoe and kayak club is on the banks of the Little Danube. Olympic champions like György Kolonics trained here.

The so-called “Post Office Field” lies on the border of Királyerdő. This sports field was renovated. Now, it hosts youth soccer teams.

In 2001, Csepel-Királyerdő had a population of 15,917 people.

Think about the many layers of history beneath our feet. From royal hunting grounds to a modern residential area, Csepel-Királyerdő blends natural beauty and historical significance. It offers a unique glimpse into Budapest’s diverse character.
