Echoes of legendary concerts fill the air. This is the Crystal Palace Bowl. Right here in Crystal Palace Park. Imagine the vibrant energy of the 1960s. Classical music once graced this natural amphitheatre. The Bowl transformed into a haven for popular music in the 1970s and 80s. Thousands flocked here. They witnessed unforgettable performances.

The Crystal Palace Bowl’s story is a tapestry woven with iconic names. Pink Floyd battled torrential rain during a 1971 show. Yes graced the stage. Keith Moon of The Who arrived by helicopter and hovercraft. He even rowed a boat on the lake dressed as a pirate. He served tea and cake to the audience.

Inflatable dinosaurs once failed to fully inflate in 1974. They became stuck before the stage. They blocked the view of Rick Wakeman’s Journey to the Centre of the Earth show. Bob Marley’s 1980 concert remains legendary. It was his biggest and last London show. He debuted Redemption Song accompanied by his acoustic guitar. A blue plaque with Ethiopian Pan-African Rastafari tri-colours commemorates the event.

The original Bowl fell into disrepair. In 1997 it was replaced. A new structure rose. The Crystal Palace Concert Platform is an oxidised steel marvel. It has an angled roof and hardwood stage. It’s even been called the “rusty laptop”. Sadly this stage also suffered neglect. It fell into disrepair. Graffiti covered the structure. Algae filled the lake.

But the music lives on. A temporary stage returned in 2021. A series of concerts revitalised the Bowl. Plans for a complete restoration remain ongoing. The Crystal Palace Bowl continues to be a symbol of musical history. It’s a stage ready for a comeback. It awaits the return of the vibrant sounds. The echoes of the past still ring out. The future of music here remains bright.
