Carved in stone a testament to faith. This is the Cruzeiro das Laranjeiras. It stands before you a National Monument since 1910. This beautiful wayside cross is more than just a pretty sight. It whispers tales of Lisbon’s rich past.

The Cruzeiro das Laranjeiras originally resided in the Quinta das Laranjeiras. It was commissioned by Pedro Eanes a Lisbon resident in the latter half of the 15th century. Imagine the bustling activity of the Quinta. The cross stood as a silent observer of daily life.

Notice the base and the shaft. They are not the originals. Time and circumstance have taken their toll. The steps and base are made of lioz stone. The shaft is Carrara marble. The graceful curves of the Gothic-style capital tell us more. It’s sculpted from a single block of limestone. See the intricate carvings of foliage? They are exquisite details. An inscription adorns it a silent record of Pedro Eanes’s devotion.

The cross itself is a masterpiece. Note the fleur-de-lis at the end of each arm. On one side a Christ crucified. On the other the Virgin Mary holds her child. This is a visual representation of the faith that the cross was meant to symbolize. The images are powerful.

Today it graces the courtyard of the Palace of the Count of Vimioso. Its journey reflects the evolution of Lisbon. From its original location in the bustling Quinta to its current home in a grand palace. The Cruzeiro das Laranjeiras has stood as a witness to history. It has witnessed centuries of change yet remains a powerful symbol of faith and devotion. Take a moment to appreciate this incredible piece of Lisbon’s heritage. Let its quiet dignity speak to you.
