Enigmatic and imposing, the Cruz Voladora Stele stands as a silent sentinel in Mexico City. The Cruz Voladora Stele, a monument steeped in history, invites us to explore its intriguing story. Originally crafted for the San Francisco Convent in Tepeapulco, Hidalgo, this 16th-century atrial cross eventually found its way to the heart of Mexico City. At the behest of Archbishop Juan de Mañozca y Zamora, the cross was relocated in 1648 to the cemetery of the Metropolitan Cathedral. The Archbishop, upon discovering the cross amidst overgrown weeds, described it as being made of red stone masonry, standing impressively at twelve rods high. The Cruz Voladora Stele has since been moved to various locations within the Cathedral grounds. It now resides in the secluded Patio de los Canónigos courtyard. While access is restricted, imagine standing before this three-meter-tall quarry stone cross. Its intricate carvings whisper tales of centuries past. The very stones seem to resonate with the echoes of Franciscan monks and the grandeur of colonial Mexico.
