Behold the Cruz del Papa Francisco. Its towering form dominates the eastern edge of Quito’s Bicentenario Park. This isn’t just any cross. This is a monument. A testament to faith. A symbol of hope.
The Cruz del Papa Francisco stands 18 meters tall. It’s a breathtaking sight. It commemorates Pope Francis’s visit to Quito in 2015. He celebrated a massive open-air mass right here. The official inauguration however happened a few days earlier on July 4th. Mayor Mauricio Rodas and Auxiliary Bishop Danilo Echeverría blessed the monument.
Architect and designer Mario Areas created this masterpiece. He presented his plan to the Quito Municipality. The project cost a total of $220.000. The cross is made from concrete aluminum steel porcelain and tempered glass. Engineers Juan Carlos Chavez and Igor Muñoz oversaw its construction.
The Cruz del Papa Francisco is based on the famous Cruz de Dozulé in Normandy. Legend says its construction was divinely ordained in 1972. It was said to save the world from catastrophe. Areas however made significant changes. Two arms support the cross. They symbolize humanity praying to heaven. Fifteen steel cables anchor it. They represent the fourteen Stations of the Cross plus the resurrection. A shallow reflecting pool surrounds it. A baptismal font symbolizes the birth of the Catholic faith.
The cross is painted white. This represents the purity of faith. Nighttime illumination symbolizes the blessing it bestows upon the city. The monument’s impressive size covers a vast 600 square meters. It stands as a powerful symbol. A beacon of faith in the heart of Quito. It’s a reminder of the Pope’s visit.
