Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s a brand new train! And not just any train – we’re standing before the CRRC, the result of a fascinating partnership between Chicago and China. CRRC Sifang, a Chinese company, won a massive contract in 2016 to supply Chicago with up to 846 new subway cars. It was the largest metro car order in Chicago’s history! To fulfill this huge order, CRRC established a $100 million assembly plant right here in Chicago in 2017. This plant, CRRC Sifang America, represents a commitment to localized manufacturing, creating over 200 jobs for Chicago residents. Not only does it assemble the trains, but it also prioritizes sourcing components locally, boosting the economies of Chicago and the US. The 7000-series cars being built here are replacing older models on eight subway lines across the city. These aren’t your grandma’s subway cars, either. The new trains boast sleek designs, energy-efficient LED lighting, and modern passenger information systems, making your commute a little brighter and a lot more comfortable.
