Ah, the Crostewitzer Brücke. What stories could this bridge tell if it could talk? It is a silent observer of Leipzig’s history.

The Sachsenbrücke is nearby. It offers a fascinating glimpse into Leipzig’s past and present. This bridge over the Elsterflutbett links the Clara-Zetkin-Park’s eastern and western parts. This park was once known as König-Albert-Park.

The Sachsenbrücke also provides a car-free route. It connects the city center to Leipzig’s western districts via Anton-Bruckner-Allee. This benefits pedestrians and cyclists. Impressively, over 15,000 cyclists use the Sachsenbrücke daily. That was the count in 2021 and 2022. This makes it Leipzig’s busiest cycling route.

The Sachsenbrücke got its name from a pivotal moment. During the Battle of Leipzig in 1813, Saxon troops switched sides. They went from supporting Napoleon Bonaparte to joining the Allies. However, the name only became official on November 7, 1901.

The first structure on this site appeared in 1897. It was built for the Sächsisch-Thüringische Industrie- und Gewerbeausstellung. The Sachsenbrücke, as we see it today, was created in 1928. This followed the widening of the Elsterflutbett.

Today, the Sachsenbrücke is a cultural landmark. Young people in Leipzig love to gather here. Musicians and artists are drawn to it, particularly in the summer. However, in June 2021, the bridge gained media attention for a different reason. During the easing of Corona lockdowns, it became a hotspot for parties and crime. Over 1,000 people gathered here on weekends to celebrate.

In April 2022, the Leipzig Climate Alliance added a unique feature. They painted climate stripes on the bridge. These stripes stretch for 74 meters and are six meters wide.

So, while we admire the Crostewitzer Brücke let’s remember its neighbor. The Sachsenbrücke stands as a testament to Leipzig’s history, its people, and its commitment to a greener future. It has seen battles, celebrations, and artistic expression. It continues to be a vital part of Leipzig’s identity.
